How can I be sure?

How can I be sure?

(Life change seen through the lens of the chakras)

When we begin to think about changing our lives in some significant way, one of first questions we ask ourselves is- How can I be sure that this is the right action, right now? Am I ready? Is my timing right? What if this is a mistake?

Oftentimes people will change jobs, careers or make physical moves without really examining what each of those changes could impact or what state of readiness exists for such a change.

While life is very much a game of three-dimensional chess at times and subject to a million possibilities, I believe that you can review some of the key variables systematically and make an informed decision as to whether it is the optimal time to change one or several aspects of your life.

One way of examining our lives is to review the seven main energy centers of our bodies (the “chakras”). Each chakra represents a physical area of the body as well as a corresponding emotional and spiritual attribute. Going though the process of examining how balanced each chakra is can be a very thorough way to determine what challenges may lie ahead and help you develop a course of action and thought to achieve greater balance where there is imbalance.

Chakras

The first chakra is the root chakra. It is located at the base of the spine and governs survival issues such as financial independence, money, and physical security. Before making a move or embarking on a new venture, ask yourself the following:

· Do I feel grounded and secure that my basic physical needs will be met adequately?

· Do I view the world as an abundant place where all I need is available to me?

· Am I financially prepared to make this change?

o The more solid your financial security is, the greater the likelihood that you will have a firm foundation from which to grow. Sometimes you will make a move with a bit less security in this aspect but try to quantify how much you need for basics as well as certain additional items.

o This is not about being wealthy, but it is about having enough to be safe and secure.

· Will my new environment provide me with physical safety and security?

· Are there limiting beliefs that I carry with me regarding security and survival?

o You need to beat out the other person in all situations to get more. There is only enough for one person and there can be only one winner.

o You must be pretty or cunning in order to succeed.

o The only way to get ahead is to struggle.

o Success is measured by how big my paycheck is.

The second chakra is the sacral chakra. It is located in the lower abdomen, about two inches below the navel and relates to our emotions as well as governing creativity, pleasure and sexual energy. Ask yourself these questions before making a serious life change:

· Am I feeling that this change will afford me pleasure and not be detrimental to my health and well-being?

· Am I making this change for me and for my genuine well-being?

o Am I taking this new job just to prove to my father that I can make great money and he can say he is proud of me?

o Am I moving to this new role because I feel I am truly interested in it or just to make more money?

o Am I running away from something as opposed to running towards something new with genuine and positive energy?

· Will I be able to bring my authentic self and creativity to the new job or am I taking it only as a steppingstone to accomplishing what I really want to do at a later time?

o Be realistic here. Sometimes you do have to take a job that you are not 100% certain that you are a “fit” but where you can develop additional skills and get exposure to a new industry.

o Whatever you do, however, you should have the ability to speak appropriately but freely and feel that you are valued. You should never compromise where your values are concerned.

· Is someone else’s agenda controlling my decision making or am I really taking this next step from a place of freedom and choice?

The third chakra is the solar plexus chakra. It is located in the upper abdomen/stomach area and relates to self-worth and confidence. If you have ever felt butterflies in the pit of your stomach, that is the solar plexus chakra giving you a signal. Before embarking on a change, ask yourself:

· Do feel a sense of personal power in making this change?

o This is not about feeling power over someone else.

o It is about taking responsibility for your life and consciously shaping a positive future by directing your actions and thoughts.

· Am I feeling confident or is there a nagging self-doubt I need to address?

· Do I feel like an imposter going into this new job or it is just a normal case of “nerves”?

· Do I feel good enough about myself or is this a life change which I think will make me look more credible and successful?

o Do a reality check and see if you are making your changes for the best reasons. If you always envied that friend who makes more money than you and seems to have it “all together”, maybe you need to think about what makes you special, which is just being you.

The fourth chakra is the heart chakra, which is located in the center of the chest, right above the heart. This chakra is the bridge between the lower chakras (material world focus) and the higher chakras (spiritual focus). Love, joy, and inner peace are associated with a balanced heart chakra. Ask yourself these questions when contemplating a serious change:

· Am I making this move from a place of joy and positivity or is it based in fear or getting even?

· Is it an “I’ll show them” energy that is driving you or an energy of new beginnings coming from a positive motivation?

· Am I feeling empathetic and able to love generously as I contemplate changes or am I closing myself off?

· Am I listening to my inner voice and trusting that there is supportive and loving energy I can give myself?

· Do I feel judged or the subject of expectations from family, friends or society that do not align with my true and unique nature?

The fifth chakra is the throat chakra. It is located at the throat and controls communication and self-expression. It governs how we communicate our truth and personal power. Ask yourself:

· Am I feeling that my words are aligned with my true values or am I just saying and doing what others think I should?

· Am I “saying what I mean and meaning what I say” in true Horton the elephant fashion?

· When I explain what changes I hope to make in my life, do the words ring true to me?

· Do my words come easily to me, or do I struggle to express myself fully and truthfully?

The sixth chakra is the third-eye chakra, located in the middle of forehead between the eyes. This is the chakra of deep intuition and the ability to see beyond material and physical realms. How would you honestly answer the following questions:

· Do I feel that I am making the right decision for me at my core?

· Do I feel that I can openly accept any challenges that may come up in association with the changes I am making in my life because, fundamentally, this is a change I want to make, and it comes from a positive place?

· Do I trust my intuition and inner guidance faculties?

The seventh chakra is the crown chakra and is at the crown of the head. This is the chakra of complete spiritual connectedness. If you have fully opened this chakra, you probably won’t have to ask so many questions but in candor, few people are able to sustainedly keep this chakra open, at least as far as I know. So, perhaps the following questions may be important:

· Do I feel protected and guided in my new adventure?

· Do I feel that I have abundance and that my highest self is guiding my actions?

· Do I feel safe releasing my need to control everything in my life?

· Am I connected to and calm in the universe?

Change is difficult and even change grounded in positive and authentic energy can be stressful. Taking that new job, changing careers, or moving to a new home require us to dismantle what was and create something we haven’t had before. Familiarity and inertia are our two greatest blockers.

We all have the stories we have developed for ourselves, and it is hard to say goodbye, even to a fantasy which no longer serves us. Some less than useful limiting beliefs and stories come with a “payoff”. If I play the victim, for example, I don’t need to take responsibility for myself and therefore am given a “pass”.

While achieving a state of balance is a lifelong goal, it is important to scan your energy centers, especially in times of change and life resets. If you can determine what seems out of balance and challenge what doesn’t feel optimal, you can begin to move towards greater balance and joy in your life.

Enjoy your journey! What a marvelous opportunity you have been given to begin again, and again and again.
