Real stories
I had a client who was both an anthropology major as well as an MBA. She was fascinated by history and loved getting to the bottom of things. Life was a continuous “dig” for her. She also was a keen businessperson and very quantitative and analytical. She had a successful career in accounting but in spite of all the success, was not happy. After a lot of lateral thinking, discussion, and research, she decided to join a private detective agency. She loved the thrill of detecting insurance fraud and protecting companies from financial loss. She loved being with a small agency where she could use all her skills, make good money and feel she was helping society.
I also had a retired C suite executive who had always had great responsibility which he executed tirelessly. He had a team who he relied on and who relied on him. For over 25 years, any task he undertook was completed well. Once retired, however, he found that he was having great difficulty getting things done. There was procrastination and a lack of urgency. After we discussed his ability to execute against plan for 25 years and his current difficulty getting things done, he finally realized that because activities in retirement were not compensated, somehow they did not matter nor did he. He had always equated receiving money with power, and power with responsibility. Now that there was no monetary reward, he felt powerless and unable to move forward credibly. Once he realized that he was the power and it had nothing to do with money, he was able to begin completing plans in a timely manner and with pride from within.
